Body Found During Search for Missing 17-Year-Old Near Texas City Dike

The body of a 17-year-old who went missing while fishing in Galveston Bay has been recovered following an extensive multi-agency search near the Texas City Dike.

Teen Identified After Recovery

Texas EquuSearch confirmed that Nathan Lowery, 17, was found Sunday afternoon after a search that lasted approximately 36 hours. Authorities recovered his body from the water near the Texas City Dike after he disappeared while fishing with his younger brother.

Fishing Trip Turned Tragic

According to search officials, Nathan and his 16-year-old brother launched a small inflatable raft into Galveston Bay shortly before sunrise on Saturday, June 27.

During the trip, the raft reportedly began losing air and taking on water. Strong winds and currents pushed the deflating raft farther into the bay, forcing both teens into the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued the 16-year-old brother, but Nathan did not resurface.

Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller said neither teenager was wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.

Multi-Agency Search

The search involved Texas EquuSearch, the Texas City Police and Fire Departments, Texas Search and Rescue, the Galveston Police Marine Division, Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

On Saturday, a Coast Guard flight crew located the family’s empty, partially inflated raft approximately 15 to 20 miles away in Trinity Bay. Search teams continued looking for Nathan until his body was recovered Sunday closer to the Texas City Dike.

Authorities have not released additional information as the investigation into the incident continues.
