Authorities are searching for a suspect after an employee was shot and killed inside an automotive paint manufacturing facility in Lansing, Illinois, on Thursday afternoon, June 4, 2026.

The incident has triggered a large-scale investigation and a manhunt as law enforcement works to determine the motive and locate the suspect.

Shooting Reported at Industrial Facility

The shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m. inside the Nippon Paint Automotive Americas (NPAA) facility, located in the 2700 block of East 170th Street.

The facility is situated near major municipal buildings, including the Lansing Village Hall and the Lansing Police Department, which are located directly across the street from the business.

Police responded quickly to reports of gunfire inside the building.

Victim Found Inside Workplace

When officers arrived, they discovered a male employee who had been shot once inside the facility.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity, pending notification of family members.

Officials confirmed that the incident appears to be isolated and targeted, rather than part of a broader threat to the public.

Suspect Fled on Foot After Shooting

According to police, the suspect fled the facility immediately after the shooting and was last seen running southbound on East 170th Street.

Law enforcement agencies have described the suspect as a Black male, approximately 5’8” to 5’10” tall and weighing around 160 pounds.

He was reportedly wearing a black hoodie or black head covering along with a white surgical mask at the time of the incident.

Large Police Response and Lockdown Measures

A major law enforcement response was deployed to the scene following the shooting.

For several hours, officers and tactical units searched the facility and surrounding area while nearby residents and schools were instructed to shelter in place.

Authorities later lifted the shelter-in-place order after investigators determined the suspect had likely left the immediate area.

More than 100 officers were reportedly involved in the response and search operation.

Investigation Ongoing

The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation and interviewing witnesses connected to the incident.

Detectives are working to establish the circumstances leading up to the shooting and whether there was any prior connection between the suspect and the victim.

Officials are urging anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.

The investigation remains active as the manhunt continues.
