Dr. Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, defeating U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in one of the nation’s most closely watched and expensive primary races.

El-Sayed Secures Narrow Victory

El-Sayed claimed victory on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, after narrowly defeating Stevens by less than one percentage point.

The former public health official and epidemiologist secured the Democratic nomination following a heated campaign that drew nearly $70 million in outside spending, making it one of the costliest Senate primaries in Michigan history.

Progressive Campaign Prevails

El-Sayed’s grassroots campaign received support from progressive leaders, including Senator Bernie Sanders, who campaigned with him in Michigan during the final stretch of the race.

Stevens was backed by several prominent Democratic leaders, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and members of the Senate Democratic leadership.

Outside groups aligned with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent heavily supporting Stevens and opposing El-Sayed.

General Election Ahead

El-Sayed will now face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the November 3, 2026, general election.

The Michigan Senate race is expected to be one of the most competitive contests of the 2026 midterm elections as Democrats seek to defend the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters.

If elected, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Following the primary, Stevens conceded the race and pledged her support for El-Sayed in the general election.
