Man Kills Wife and 4 Children in Winfield Home Before Dying by Suicide

Crime

The Brief

A 53-year-old man killed his 44-year-old wife and their four children inside their Winfield, Kansas, home Tuesday before dying by suicide, authorities said.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Winfield Police Department are investigating the deaths. Police identified the man as Ronald H. Williams Sr. and said he called 911 around 8:50 a.m. to report that he had killed his family and planned to die by suicide.

Officers who were nearby responded to the home in the 400 block of West Ninth Street. When they approached, they heard a gunshot from inside the residence.

Police then established a perimeter and treated the situation as a barricade incident. A tactical team entered the home about two hours later and found six people dead.

What We Know

Authorities identified the five victims as 44-year-old Kelly L. George and the couple’s four children: 9-year-old Carol A. Williams, 7-year-old Ronald H. Williams Jr., 5-year-old Sarah K. Williams and 3-year-old Kelly M. Magee-Williams. Williams Sr. was also found dead inside the home.

Investigators believe Williams killed the five family members before calling 911. Kansas Bureau of Investigation officials said the information he provided during the call was consistent with what officers later found at the residence.

Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong said officers had received several reports about Williams’ erratic and aggressive behavior in the weeks before the killings. Those reports included confrontations and yelling at people, according to authorities. Police said earlier calls did not provide enough evidence to indicate the tragedy that followed.

State records reviewed by local news organizations also show that Williams had a lengthy criminal history. He had been registered as a sex offender following a conviction involving a minor and had faced other felony cases over the years.

The investigation is being handled by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Winfield Police Department. Authorities have described the incident as isolated and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

What’s Next

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence from the Winfield home as they work to establish the full timeline and determine what led to the killings.

Authorities have not announced a formal motive. Because Williams is also dead, the investigation will focus on reconstructing the events through evidence, witness accounts, records and other investigative findings.

The Winfield community has also begun gathering to remember the five victims. Local residents and community groups have organized memorial efforts following the deaths.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Winfield police are expected to provide additional confirmed information as the investigation progresses.
