1 Dead After Home Explosion in Southern Illinois

One person was killed after a powerful home explosion destroyed a house and damaged neighboring properties in Energy, Illinois, on Tuesday evening, August 4, 2026.

House Leveled by Explosion

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, the explosion occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. at a home near the intersection of West College Street and McGinnis Street in the village of Energy.

The blast completely destroyed the residence, reducing it to its foundation and sending debris across the surrounding neighborhood. Several nearby homes suffered broken windows and structural damage.

One Person Killed, Two Neighbors Injured

Authorities identified the victim as 77-year-old David “Dave” Turner, who died in the explosion.

Two neighboring residents suffered minor injuries. Officials said one elderly neighbor was knocked to the ground by the force of the blast.

Emergency crews responded quickly and secured the area while firefighters searched through the debris.

Cause Under Investigation

Investigators believe the explosion is consistent with a natural gas or propane incident, although the exact cause has not been determined.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating alongside the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Roads surrounding the scene remain closed as investigators continue to examine the site.

The American Red Cross is assisting residents displaced by the explosion.
