Explosion Outside NYC Federal Building, Suspect Arrested

An explosion outside a federal building in Lower Manhattan on Monday morning led to the arrest of a suspect and prompted a large response from federal and local law enforcement authorities.

Explosion Reported at Federal Plaza

According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, outside 26 Federal Plaza, also known as the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building.

Investigators said the suspect allegedly wheeled a cart to the area and ignited an incendiary device involving fireworks and a flammable liquid inside a garbage can. The explosion produced a loud blast and thick white smoke that spread across the sidewalk.

The building houses several federal agencies, including the FBI’s New York Field Office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and a federal immigration court.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

Immediately after the explosion, armed FBI agents and federal officers rushed from the building and detained the suspect.

Authorities also recovered a firearm and several BB-style airsoft rifles at the scene.

Minor Injuries Reported

Officials said no serious injuries were reported.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that two people suffered minor injuries. The New York City Fire Department transported one person to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigation Continues

The FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force and the New York Police Department are leading the investigation.

Authorities have not announced an official motive. However, local reports indicate investigators are examining whether the incident may have been connected to anti-ICE sentiments, as 26 Federal Plaza is a frequent location for immigration-related demonstrations.

Officials urged the public to avoid the area around Worth Street and Lafayette Street while investigators process the scene and road closures remain in effect.
