Man sought in 2021 killing of National Guard member added to FBI’s 10 most wanted list
The FBI on Tuesday added a man accused in the 2021 murder of Illinois National Guard soldier Chrys Carvajal to its “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list, increasing the reward for the man’s capture to $1 million.
The feds are looking for Joseph “Troubles” Matos, 44, a purported member of the Milwaukee Kings street gang. Matos has ties to Dallas and California but is believed to be hiding in the Chicago area, authorities said.
“Today’s addition of Matos to the FBI’s notorious Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list ensures that his face and description will be found on every FBI-affiliated website and social media platform, and this case will now be on every phone around the world until he is apprehended,” said Ryan Whalen, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office.
Matos is 6’2″, weighs 220 pounds and has brown hair and eyes. His tattoos include the words “M-Town Kings” on the right side of his neck, “1300″ on the left side of his neck, “Move in Silence” on his right hand, “Trust no one” on his left hand and “Heavensent, Hellbound” on his arms, according to the FBI.
Tattooed on his belly are the words “MOST WANTED,” authorities said.
Matos and Gary “Gotti” Roberson each face a federal racketeering charge over Carvajal’s July 2021 murder. Roberson is in custody and faces trial in February, but Matos has avoided arrest ever since a grand jury handed up their indictment in May 2024.
Carvajal was fatally shot in Belmont Cragin just one week shy of his 20th birthday. Family said at the time that the Portage Park resident had attended a house party with his girlfriend, and at one point he went to get something from his car.
He was later found lying unresponsive on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds to the back and abdomen in the 2200 block of North Lockwood Avenue, police said. He was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Federal authorities have said Matos and Roberson were traveling through rival gang territory on July 3, 2021, when they spotted Carvajal. Roberson stepped out of the backseat of a red Audi driven by Matos and shot Carvajal after Carvajal crossed the intersection of North Lockwood and West Belden avenues, according to an FBI affidavit.
The pair murdered Carvajal to maintain and increase their position in the Milwaukee Kings street gang, according to their indictment.
