Man shoots 6 at military draft office in Kyiv, Ukraine

A man opened fire at a military draft office in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, injuring three police officers and three soldiers, according to local authorities. All six victims were hospitalized.

The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. on Monday at a military recruitment office in the city’s Pechersk district, according to Kyiv’s military recruitment authority.

Police had brought the man to the office over an alleged violation of Ukraine’s mobilization law, which governs calling people up for military service.

During a check at the office, the man pulled out a weapon and opened fire on police officers and soldiers, according to the recruitment authority. The suspect was then detained.

Ambulances took the three injured officers and the three injured soldiers to hospitals. Kyiv police said they are receiving medical care, but their conditions were not immediately known.

Ukraine’s military recruitment system has faced criticism over coercive practices and the treatment of men brought to draft offices.

The country’s human rights commissioner received more than 6,000 complaints about recruitment officials in 2025, and inspections documented unlawful detentions, beatings and other forms of coercion.
