Woman in custody after girl, 7, fatally stabbed in Chatham

A 7-year-old girl died after being stabbed in the Chatham neighborhood Saturday, police said.

The girl was walking outside in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue just before noon when a woman approached her and stabbed her multiple times in the back, according to Chicago police.

Bystanders noticed the stabbing and intervened, detaining the woman, police said.

The girl was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The woman suffered injuries during the scuffle with bystanders, and she was taken to the hospital and taken into police custody.

Detectives are investigating.
