Russia Strikes Kyiv With Missiles and Drones Hours After Agreeing to Peace Talks
KYIV — A Russian barrage of ballistic missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight Thursday, killing one person and injuring 22 others, Ukrainian officials said. The assault came just hours after the Kremlin agreed to revive U.S.-brokered negotiations intended to bring an end to the war.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported damage to residential buildings, transport facilities and other civilian infrastructure across several parts of the capital. In Dniprovskyi district, on the eastern side of the Dnipro River, fires erupted, killing one person and injuring six others, including a child.
The strikes followed comments Wednesday from Yuri Ushakov, a foreign affairs adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ushakov said Putin had agreed “in principle” to resume three-way talks with the United States and Ukraine after Nov. 10, one week after the U.S. midterm elections. Putin had met earlier with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the prospect of renewed negotiations, while stopping short of expressing confidence that they would succeed.
“We’ll see what happens this time,” Zelenskyy said shortly before air-raid sirens and missile alerts rang out across Kyiv.
