14 killed, 7 injured in landslide at illegal gold mine in Colombia
At least 14 people were killed when a landslide struck an illegal gold mine in southwestern Colombia, according to local media. Seven others were injured, and a search for additional victims is continuing.
The collapse happened at an open-pit mine in a rural area of Santa Barbara de Iscuande, in the Pacific coastal region of Nariño, Noticias Caracol reported, citing regional peace and human rights secretary Alex Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said people were buried while working at the mine. He initially reported nine deaths before giving the station an updated toll of 14 dead and seven injured.
Footage from the scene showed community members searching through the mine for victims. Bodies were being recovered and loaded into boats.
The remote location and security conditions in the area have complicated efforts by authorities to reach the site. The number of people who may still be missing remains unclear as the search continues.
