5 found shot dead in apparent murder-suicide near Chicago
Five adults were found shot to death at a home near Chicago, Illinois, in an apparent murder-suicide, according to police.
Officers responded to the 200 block of Wellington Avenue in Mundelein, a suburb north of Chicago, at about 11:45 p.m. on Sunday for a welfare check, according to the Mundelein Police Department. A family member had requested the check after being unable to reach a relative inside the home.
Police entered the residence and found three men and two women dead. Preliminary findings indicate that all five suffered apparent gunshot wounds and were shot at close range with a handgun.
Authorities recovered two handguns at the scene. Police say those involved were either family members or in a domestic relationship, and evidence gathered at the home indicates an apparent murder-suicide.
Police described the deaths as an isolated incident and said there is no continuing danger to the community.
The names of those who died are being withheld pending autopsies and completion of notifications to their relatives. Mundelein detectives, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and the Lake County Coroner’s Office are conducting the investigation.
