UMD club tennis suspended after ‘racist imagery’ sent to other college teams

The University of Maryland’s entire club tennis team is suspended after some of its members emailed “racist imagery” to other university tennis clubs ahead of this weekend’s fall tournament at College Park.
According to the university, the Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) staff found out on Saturday that some of the club tennis members sent “programming material with a graphic containing racist imagery.” The graphic targeted people who are Black or African American, the university said in a statement.
Although some of the members sent out the emails, RecWell suspended the entire team indefinitely pending an investigation by the Office of Student Conduct.
The team forfeited its matches in the fall tournament, which will continue on this weekend. The club tennis student leaders met with other tournament team captains to apologize. They also sent an apology email to the other teams.
“The University of Maryland is horrified and expresses its regret and sincere apology for the harm that this has caused,” the university’s apology read.
The RecWell director sent an apology to the club presidents of all the participating teams.
The incident has been referred to the university’s police department.
