The One Thing Kyle Chandler And Connie Britton Refused To Do On Friday Night Lights – The List
Although it ended in 2011, “Friday Night Lights” remains one of the most beloved TV shows of the 21st century. The series, which starred Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton as Eric and Tami Taylor, focused on the people of Dillon, Texas, capturing the essence of small-town life and the drama that comes with it. And while “Friday Night Lights” wasn’t afraid to shock fans with unexpected twists, there was one thing Chandler and Britton made sure fans would never need to worry about.
20 years after the series ended, Chandler, Britton, and other “Friday Night Lights” cast members appeared on “Today” to discuss the show’s lasting impact and how fans have continued to embrace it. During the talk, Britton revealed that she and Chandler made a promise to each other: “We agreed, right at the outset, no matter what, we can’t let them make either one of us have an affair … They really tried. We pushed right back on it.”
Britton went into more detail on their pact at the ATX Television Festival in Austin in 2026, explaining (per People), “On the first night we shot together, we went out to dinner … and we talked about what was important to us about marriage and relationships … Somewhere in the midst of that, we both were like, ‘We don’t want our characters to have affairs; we don’t want it about pitting the two of them against each other.'” The rock-solid relationship between Chandler and Britton’s characters is one of the things fans love most about the show, showing that no matter how hard life can get at times — especially for a fictional football team — true love can help make things a little easier to handle.
Kyle Chandler doesn’t want to return to Friday Night Lights
“Friday Night Lights” started as a movie that starred Billy Bob Thorton, and while it was well-received by critics, it didn’t make much noise at the box office. Still, fans of the show have long hoped the cast would return for a new movie, catching everyone up on the Taylors and their daughters. Sadly, Kyle Chandler, who is a proud dad just like his character, is against the idea.
Chandler won an Emmy for his role as Coach Taylor, and recalled the night at ATX, saying (per IndieWire), “That night when I did win the award, it only serves as credit to the way you guys ended the show.” And that ending is why he is resistant to returning to the role, explaining, “I had an offer to do ‘Friday Night Lights: The Movie,’ and I just immediately said, ‘No.’ We really did something. I knew it was something great … we all did a great job, it was just once in a lifetime — period.”
Connie Britton, whose career almost had a very different trajectory, has also tampered down fan hopes for more. Appearing on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2018, she gave a frank answer, saying, “Guys, I just don’t think it’s going to happen.” Britton went on to admit there was a time when it seemed possible, saying, “I was all for it in the beginning. I think if we had done it early on, but now I really do see how special it is to end a series in that way. It was just so beautifully done …” And while fans may never get their movie, they will always have five great seasons to revisit.
