Storm Team4: Rain from Isaias expected late Saturday, all day Sunday

4 things to know about the weather:

  1. Sunny stretch is over
  2. Staying dry for now
  3. Prepare for heavy rain
  4. Likely 1-2″ on Sunday

Hurricane Isaias made landfall on the Gulf Coast Friday evening. By late Saturday into Sunday morning, rain will be reaching our area.

Take full advantage of Saturday’s dry weather to ensure you and your property are prepared for heavy rain that’s expected to last all day Sunday. Clean out the storm drains and gutters, and secure all loose outdoor items.

How much rain will the DC area get?

The winds in our area will be in the 20-30 mph range, but with a driving rain, you most certainly will not want to be outside.

The main update to the forecast is that the heavier rain now looks more likely to get here earlier in the day on Sunday. This is not good news for those going to the Commanders game Sunday afternoon, nor any other outdoor activities. There does look to be some dry time during the afternoon on Sunday — but also a chance for heavier downpours.

For the DMV, rain totals for this storm — from about 5 a.m. Sunday to about 11 a.m. Monday — are expected to be in the 1.5-to-2-inch range, with local amounts possibly as much as 2.5 to 3 inches. That much rain in a 24- to 30-hour period could certainly cause some flooding concerns, so it would be wise to stay at home if possible to keep safe and dry.

The rain will end Monday morning, and there’s likely to be some sunshine by Monday afternoon.

In the wake of the storm, Tuesday should be sunny, warm and humid, with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s. A cold front Tuesday night will bring cooler, more October-like conditions back for the second half of next week.
