Slain NYC Jogger Katie Suarez Saves Five Lives Through Organ Donation
Katie Suarez, the Brooklyn jogger who was fatally stabbed in the neck by a former NYPD officer last week, saved five lives through organ donation, according to law enforcement sources.
Suarez, 28, donated her pancreas, liver, kidneys and heart after the brutal attack on the Shore Parkway Greenway promenade at about 8 p.m. Oct. 30, sources told The Post.
She was declared brain dead after the stabbing but remained on life support while doctors recovered her organs, police sources said.
Suarez’s devastated mother, Yasira Suarez, confirmed that her daughter died several days after the bloody attack.
“She passed away yesterday. Katie is no longer with us, unfortunately,” Yasira Suarez said Tuesday.
“Destroyed. We are all destroyed,” the grieving mother said, calling on the suspect, who was then still at large, to surrender.
“You took an angel,” she said.
Sayed Mohassib, 27, was arrested Saturday morning and charged with second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with evidence.
Here’s the latest on Katie Suarez, the NYC jogger who was stabbed during a run:
Mohassib briefly served with the NYPD before joining the Marines, where he was deemed psychologically unfit. Police tracked him down after video showed him leaving the Shore Parkway Greenway around the time Suarez was attacked, the sources said.
During questioning at the 62nd Precinct, the accused killer allegedly told police that he awoke from a blackout covered in blood and holding the murder weapon, which he later discarded in the garbage.
Hours later, Mohassib appeared dazed and wore an icy expression as officers led him from the Bensonhurst station in handcuffs at about 4 p.m. Saturday. He was awaiting arraignment that evening.
Mohassib currently works as an elementary school educator in Brooklyn, just three blocks from where the stabbing occurred.
