Six Wounded in Halloween Party Shooting Near University of Delaware

At least six people were injured in a mass shooting at a Halloween party Saturday night near the University of Delaware, sending costumed college students running for safety.

Police were called to a crowded section of downtown Newark, Delaware, shortly after 11 p.m.

Witnesses said Main Street was filled with Halloween revelers when several shots rang out, triggering panic as people scrambled away from the scene.

“People were running, screaming. They had helicopters in the sky flashing lights on people,” witness Jayden Ngalim told NBC Philadelphia.

“The people were speeding down the road. It got chaotic like quick,” he added.

Another witness said he heard a series of sharp popping sounds before the crowd began searching for cover.

“I was right there on the corner and all we hear is like sharp pops. People, we’re thinking at first it’s the cars and then everyone starts running,” Nathaniel Davila said.

A third witness, Landon Singleton, said he rushed to help one of the victims by removing his shirt and holding it against the person’s gunshot wound.

“He squeezed my hand, like his last hope,” Singleton said.

The university issued an emergency alert shortly before 11:30 p.m., informing students and others about the shooting and urging them to stay away from the area.

All six victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not known as of Sunday morning.

Authorities had not released information about any arrests or identified suspects.
