Michael Douglas has led quite the life in the public eye. Yet, some scandalous moments over the course of his career weren’t public, exactly. His memoir “One Helluva Ride,” which was published on October 6, 2026, takes fans along for the whole ride. This includes detailing some romances the world never knew about.
In the 1984 film “Romancing the Stone,” Douglas and Kathleen Turner played love interests. He admitted in his new book that life imitated art for the pair. Long before Douglas married Catherine Zeta-Jones, he had been married to Diandra Luker. In his memoir, he claimed that he and Luker were separated when he left for Mexico to film “Romancing the Stone.” On meeting his co-star, Douglas wrote, “Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice … I instantly liked her, and we were immediately attracted to each other” (via People).
The duo denied romance rumors for decades. In his book, however, Douglas admits, “The truth is that during the production of ‘Romancing the Stone,’ Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship. It wasn’t a fly-by night affair; it grew naturally … Like every other guy in the world at the time, I was knocked sideways by Kathleen…. ” When Luker visited the set with her and Douglas’ son, however, the jig was up. He wrote that she “made it clear to [Turner] that we were still married,” tactfully adding, “Her view of the terms of our separation was different from mine.” Turner subsequently ended things, but she and Douglas continued to collaborate on other projects over the years, including the “Romancing the Stone” sequel.
Michael Douglas also revealed his on-set affair with Jeanne Tripplehorn
There have been plenty of celeb love affairs that were kept secret until death. Evidently, Michael Douglas wasn’t about to let that happen. Luckily for him, it seems that his exes had no hard feelings about his choice to kiss and tell in his new book. After hearing that Douglas had revealed their affair, Kathleen Turner told People, “Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book.”
Douglas also discussed falling for another on-screen love interest. While filming the 1992 film “Basic Instinct,” he had a secret affair with co-star Jeanne Tripplehorn. Per People, Douglas wrote in “One Helluva Ride” that he “fell very hard for Jeanne despite our nearly twenty-year age difference,” noting, “With Jeanne, the passion you see onscreen reflects the genuine passion of our brief affair.” At first Tripplehorn wasn’t interested in a relationship with a married man, since Douglas was still married to Diandra Luker. This time, though, he said, “but I assured her that Diandra and I had formally separated … we knew the marriage was over.”
Douglas told People that ahead of including Tripplehorn in his book, he called her and asked her for the okay, which she gave him, even though it had been quite some time since they’d spoken. He also noted, “I didn’t name anybody for the sake of notches on your holster or something like that. These are people that I’ve had relationships with in my life.”
