Man killed, 6 injured in Takoma house fire
A man died and six people were taken to the hospital after a house fire in Northwest D.C. Sunday morning.
The fire broke out here just before 5 a.m. in the 600 block of Geranium Street. D.C. Fire and EMS said when they arrived, there was fire and smoke coming from the front and back of the home.
“It was really scary to see and just to hear the people screaming,” said Monique Chettiar, a neighbor. “I knew something bad was going on.”
She said the fire woke her up, and she immediately called 911.
“They had said that somebody was on the way and actually when I had called, fire engines were already on the way,” Chettiar said. “[…] I didn’t know what to do at that point. I could smell the smoke through the window. You could see that it was really dark smoke and thick and something really bad was happening.”
Neighbors told News4 the home belongs to a family and that children live there.
D.C. Fire EMS said they transported a woman, a man and a boy with critical injuries, as well as three people with non life-threatening injuries — another woman and two other children.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Union that represents D.C. firefighters put out a statement about battling the fire, saying, in part,“Facing difficult and evolving conditions, our members worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped inside, to bring the fire under control, and to provide critical life saving care to the adults and young children who they rescued.”
