Kate Middleton (a.k.a. Catherine, Princess of Wales) just co-signed one of fall 2026’s most trendy and comfortable shoes: loafers. The royal was spotted in a dark brown pair of penny loafers while out and about in Southend, England, on September 24, proving just how chic this elevated practical shoe can be. Personal stylist and creator of Your Style Transformation Academy Cynthia Kennedy exclusively told Women.com that loafers are one of fall 2026’s biggest shoe trends as they tap into the menswear aesthetic that’s been dominating runways. And Middleton’s look is the perfect example of that.

Her comfortable footwear helped her feet stay warm (but not too warm) and let her easily walk on the uneven ground outside, which she may have struggled with in heels. Even better? The sensible footwear would have kept her feet dry amid any sudden fall showers. Middleton, who’s also been spotted in autumn’s it color, kept the rest of her look simple yet chic, opting for a black top with black, belted pants. The royal added a little more texture and pattern with her gray and black tweed blazer. For jewelry, she kept things simple with a silver chain necklace that upgraded her look without overwhelming it.

If you’re looking to emulate Middleton’s footwear, we don’t blame you. Now that the trendy style is officially royal approved, there’s never been a better time to treat yourself. Middleton’s exact shoes are Boden’s Nya Penny Loafers in Chocolate Brown Leather. If you want to put your own spin on them though, Freeberry Store’s Leather Penny Loafers in Burgundy Patent offer a patent take on Middleton’s shoe choice in one of the season’s hottest colors. If you’re looking for less shine, then try the AUPEWEL Penny Loafers in Brown.

Loafers can also look chic with jeans and skirts in fall 2026

Though Kate Middleton paired her penny loafers with structured pants and a polished and conservative blazer, it’s okay if that’s not your vibe. This shoe choice offers plenty of versatility. Cynthia Kennedy exclusively told Women.com that loafers can also be worn with a pair of relaxed jeans for a more casual look (just make sure you’re familiar with fall 2026’s biggest denim trends before you invest in a new pair!). If skirts are more your aesthetic though, Kennedy suggests sporting your trendy loafers with a midi skirt. “You should keep the rest of the look modern enough so the shoe seems deliberate and not overly preppy,” she suggests.

Fall loafer inspo is clearly Middleton’s thing, because this isn’t the first time she’s had our fashion juices flowing thanks to her trendy, seasonal footwear. In September 2025, Middleton had all eyes on her when she went to London’s Natural History Museum in light brown, pointed, and suede ballerina loafers. They featured a silver buckle and a large fringe over her toes, and, just like her more recent ensemble, she paired them with tailored pants and a blazer. But while that footwear was a little more interesting than the fall 2026 shoes that piqued our interest, it’s hard to argue with the practicality, versatility, and comfort of this royal’s more recent, darker loafer choice.
