Kamala Harris Met With Silence at Mississippi Rally After Quote Flub

Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ effort to energize voters at a Democratic rally in Mississippi drew a muted response Thursday, as she repeated a convoluted quote inside a high school gym that was far from full.

“You know, I mentor a lot of young people, and I talk to them sometimes and part of the advice I give them is, you know, never let someone else with limited ability to see your capacity be a limitation on your ambition,” Harris said at the Columbus, Miss., event supporting Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom.

The line received little reaction from the audience, leading Harris to repeat it.

“Let me repeat that: Never let anybody else’s, somebody else’s limited ability to see your capacity to be a limitation on your ambition,” she said, drawing a somewhat stronger response from rally attendees.

“That’s their limitation. That’s not our limitation. That’s their limitation,” Harris added before continuing with another series of remarks.

“We are not limited in our ambition and desire and ability to see what is possible and what can be,” she told the crowd.

Colom, a state district attorney challenging incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) in the midterm elections, acknowledged that his decision to invite the failed 2024 presidential candidate to campaign for him had prompted questions.

“Why would you do that?” Colom said he was asked.

“You know what I told them, ‘Why not?’” the Senate hopeful said before Harris took the stage.
