Jeff Bezos Says AI Could Enable Three-Day Workweeks and Single-Income Families

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, stated that artificial intelligence could enable three-day workweeks while also allowing families to comfortably survive on a single income. Speaking with host Bret Baier on Fox News’ Special Report, he maintained a highly optimistic view of automation. He said that artificial intelligence could result in massive economy-wide productivity gains, giving people more choices.

AI-driven productivity gains

In traditional economics, worker income is tied to the output they produce. Bezos claims that AI will lead to double-digit efficiency boosts by reducing the time required to generate the same economic value. Therefore, a worker could choose to work a three-day workweek and generate sufficient income to support their lifestyle. In two-earner households, this increased autonomy could also allow one partner to voluntarily quit their job and pursue other interests.

The host pointed out that Amazon had laid off 30,000 corporate roles over the past year. Bezos responded that these lay-offs were not triggered by AI. He said Amazon’s recent layoffs were an operational correction. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon had doubled its hiring to handle the rising demand for e-commerce. Therefore, the recent lay-offs were driven by a change in its economic model.

Bezos dismissed the concerns about AI resulting in job losses. He predicted the exact opposite. He said if millions of workers choose to adopt three-day workweeks or resign from their jobs in dual-income households, labor shortages will be massive. This will force companies to compete for workers.

Prometheus as artificial general engineer

To substantiate his argument, Bezos relied on his own massive AI venture, Prometheus. It is a heavily funded startup valued at $41 billion and programmed to bridge software and physical manufacturing.

Traditionally, building complex hardware such as jet engines and automobiles required decades of rigorous testing and equipment tuning. Prometheus acts as an artificial general engineer by compressing this timeline through optimized workflows. Bezos predicts a future where AI handles complex engineering and physics tasks required to manufacture products.

Regulating murder, not knives

When asked about how governments should respond to the rapid rise of AI, Bezos said over-regulating AI models will stifle economic growth. He used the analogy of knives and murder. He said a knife should not be regulated as it is a highly productive tool. Intervention should focus on regulating murder. Therefore, legal intervention should occur only when someone uses a productive tool maliciously.

He further stated that if Western governments over-regulate domestic AI laboratories, adversaries such as China may win the AI race.
