JERUSALEM – Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men after they carried out an attack near the West Bank city of Hebron on Friday morning, according to Israel’s military. At least five people were wounded, some of them critically.

Following the attack, the military imposed roadblocks and closed roads in Palestinian towns across the surrounding area.

Emergency responders said five people were injured and that some were in critical condition as they were evacuated to hospitals in Israel. In a statement, the responders said gunfire was still erupting when they reached the scene near Yehuda Junction.

The responders said two men in their 20s suffered gunshot wounds to their lower limbs. One of the injured men was unconscious and in serious condition.

The deadly shooting occurred as Israeli voters prepare to decide next Tuesday whether to give Benjamin Netanyahu another term as prime minister or open a new chapter in the country’s politics. The election is being held three years after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel that set off the war in Gaza.
