ICE officer shoots man during immigration arrest in New York City

An ICE officer shot and injured a man during an immigration enforcement operation in New York City, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Police said the man was conscious and receiving treatment at a hospital.

The shooting happened at around 4 p.m. on Thursday in the Marble Hill neighborhood. DHS said officers were conducting a targeted operation to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic who was in the country illegally.

During the operation, an officer fired his weapon and injured the man, according to DHS. Officers immediately provided medical aid before he was taken to a local hospital.

The agency did not explain what led the officer to open fire. The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are at the scene, and the incident remains under investigation.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said its officers were not involved and were not at the scene when the shooting occurred.

DHS said the man had a prior conviction for grand larceny and had previously been arrested on allegations involving assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession. The agency also alleged that he had ties to the Trinitarios gang.

According to DHS, the NYPD arrested the man on December 7, 2023, and he was released a few days later.

“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”

On Wednesday, CNN reported that ICE leadership had instructed agents nationwide to increase arrests to 3,000 people a day, about 1,000 above the agency’s recent daily average. Agents were also instructed to aim for 19,000 arrests per week.
