Honest Texas Barber Returns $128K Found on Top of Bank ATM

A North Texas barber discovered a small fortune sitting atop a bank ATM last month and returned every dollar, authorities said.

The Good Samaritan, who did not reveal his identity to CBS, was visiting the ATM with a 42-year-old woman when they found bags containing $128,510 in cash and another bag holding 19 checks, according to police.

“I’ve never had a case like this before, ever,” Lewisville police detective Gina Miller told CBS.

The bags were filled with $128,510 in cash and a smaller bag packed with 19 checks, police said. Harold M. Lambert

After calling 911, the 37-year-old Lewisville resident noticed that one of the bags carried a Chick-fil-A label. He tried to return the money to the fast-food restaurant, but its manager said it did not belong to the business.

A responding officer counted the cash twice to verify that the full amount was present before securing it in a safe location.

“I think to find that kind of money, or that amount of money, is certainly rare,” Lewisville police chief Brook Rollins told CBS.

“That’s very unusual. And then to not find it connected to any criminal activity is certainly unusual.”

Police confirmed that the cash belonged to Bank of America and was being handled by its cash-management contractor, Brinks.

According to police and CBS, a Brinks technician had serviced the ATM and was supposed to transport the money but accidentally left the bags on top of the machine.

Cops confirmed the cash belonged to Bank of America and was being processed by its cash management vendor, Brinks. Christopher Sadowski

“The bag was just sitting there,” Miller said. “There was no indication of a crime occurring. It looked like it was just left there by accident.”

Bank of America later recovered the money.

Rollins said the incident highlighted the vital role community members play in helping police.

“We are one half of the equation, the police; the other half is the community,” he told CBS.

The Lewisville Police Department and Bank of America did not immediately respond to The Post’s requests for comment.
