Get Fit In Your 60s By Copying Andie MacDowell’s Playful Fitness Routine – Women

When we think of Hollywood stars who are incredibly fit and energetic in their 60s, Andie MacDowell certainly comes to mind. The “Melpomène” actor has built a low-stress fitness routine around weight training, walking, yoga, and other activities that have served her well over the years. Speaking with InStyle, she revealed her playful approach to working out. “So, I jump up and down, and I do a lot of weight work,” she shared.

For MacDowell, who has undergone a subtle gray hair transformation, her focus at this stage in her life is preserving her bone density. “We’re all going in and having our bone density checked. But you can improve your bone density. It’s not like you don’t have a choice,” she said. This has led to a fitness routine centered around strength training, and she continued, “I’m addicted now to weights. It’s really what you need to do as you’re ageing.”

There’s a good reason to copy MacDowell’s fitness routine. While weightlifting is effective for building and maintaining muscle mass and strength, many people don’t realize that strong muscles help to strengthen bones, making it especially worthwhile as we age. MacDowell says she’s been reaping the benefits of this workout and is impressed with the results. “I have a great bottom. When I squeeze it … it’s unbelievable what I have accomplished by working out. And my arms are strong, everything’s strong. It’s fabulous,” she said.

Exercise matters to MacDowell, and she incorporates it into her days no matter what. When she has more free time, she takes extensive morning walks. “I love to get in 5 miles. That’s my goal,” she told Today. “It’s my goal and it doesn’t always happen, but that’s what I like. It makes me happy,” noting, “It’s really good to get sunlight into your eyes first thing in the morning, so that’s what I love to do. Usually by 7 o’clock, I’m walking on the beach.”

MacDowell, who is rewriting the script for being single in your late 60s, maintains a busy work schedule, and carves out time on set to work out. “When I’m working, I will do yoga at lunch,” she told Today. “I might do 30 minutes of yoga if I don’t have (more) time.” The actor, who also enjoys Pilates and water aerobics, says yoga helps her meditate. “It makes me high when I do it. I feel the endorphins and I feel so good about myself,” she says. “It’s my way of meditating.”

Not one to care what others think, MacDowell also shared her preferred method of relieving stress. “I believe in forest bathing,” she told the outlet. “There’s science behind it … When I’m away working and I’m really tired, I hug a tree. I don’t care what people think. I don’t care who sees me. I go up and I thank them.”
