Apple’s iPhone Duo Backordered Until 2027 as Pre-Orders Surge

Apple is experiencing strong demand for its new foldable iPhone, with the initial supply selling out rapidly after pre-orders opened Friday.

“Apple opened iPhone Duo pre-orders this morning, and the early read looks robust in our view, with demand for Cupertino’s first foldable running well ahead of supply out of the gates,” Wall Street analyst Dan Ives, a partner at Yorkville Ives, wrote in a research note.

Pre-orders for the Duo began Friday at 8 a.m. ET through apple.com and the Apple Store app. Within minutes, estimated delivery dates slipped beyond the phone’s official Oct. 23 launch and into next year. By Friday afternoon, the device was backordered until late January.

“It’s been 3 minutes, and it’s sold out at every store around the NYC/CT area,” Max Weinbach, an analyst at market research firm Creativestrat, posted on X.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for information about the number of pre-order requests it received.

Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, introduced the iPhone Duo last month. The foldable allows users to run two separate apps side by side or view two windows from the same website, including for tasks such as comparison shopping.

The Duo starts at $1,999 with 256 GB of storage. Folded, it is roughly the size of a passport, while its expanded screen is the largest display Apple has put on a phone and more closely resembles an iPad than an iPhone.

Ternus also unveiled the iPhone 18 during Apple’s annual fall showcase. That model went on sale last month.

Ives expects demand for the Duo to stay strong through 2027 as large numbers of iPhone owners prepare to upgrade. He estimates Apple will sell about 10 million units over the next few quarters, followed by as many as 25 million in 2027.
