Russian missile attack on Kyiv kills 1, hits major power plant

A Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, Ukraine, killed one and injured six others, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attack hit one of the capital’s main power plants and damaged a residential building, where apartments caught fire.

Zelenskyy said Tuesday that the main target was the CHPP-4 power plant, which was struck during the attack. A fire at the residential building engulfed apartments on the first through eighth floors, and emergency crews conducted a rescue operation.

The Ukrainian president said his country received no advance warning from its partners about the ballistic missile launch, the second such instance this week. Ukrainian systems detected the missiles only when they were already approaching Kyiv, he said.

The attack followed President Trump’s announcement Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire. Trump did not provide details about the agreement’s terms, while Zelenskyy said Ukraine supported it and was awaiting further information from the United States.

“The facts show that the Russians do not consider themselves bound by what the President of the United States said,” Zelenskyy said Tuesday. “Ukraine supported an energy ceasefire. Russia is targeting yet another power plant and the lives of our people.”

Zelenskyy said Monday that Ukraine had refrained from attacking energy facilities in Russia the previous night because of Trump’s announcement. He said Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and other facilities had continued.

“I think it was Putin’s answer to President Trump,” Zelenskyy said. “And the message from Russia was very clear: they don’t know anything about the energy ceasefire.”
