4 shot at Columbus Park after report of fight on party bus – CWB Chicago

Four people were shot, two critically, during a gathering in the parking lot of Columbus Park on the West Side early Sunday, following reports of a fight aboard a party bus.

Chicago police released a brief statement about the shooting that did not identify the park as the location. The statement said a 45-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when an SUV pulled alongside him and someone inside began firing, striking him multiple times. The other victims later arrived at local hospitals, according to CPD.

However, law enforcement sources and CPD radio transmissions indicate that several cars and a party bus had gathered in the Columbus Park parking lot in the 600 block of South Central Avenue when someone began shooting around 2:27 a.m. At least one caller reported that a fight had broken out aboard the party bus before the shooting.

An officer reviewing surveillance footage reported seeing cars speeding away from the area before police arrived.

Officers found a 39-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the chest and a 45-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the chest and lower extremities. The woman was found at the scene, while the man was located on the outbound ramp to the Eisenhower Expressway. Both were listed in critical condition.

The other victims were a 30-year-old man who was shot in the neck and left shoulder and a 28-year-old man who was shot twice in the face, according to CPD.

Officers also reported finding a firearm in bushes near where one of the victims had been shot. Six shell casings were recovered, according to police radio traffic.

The incident was the second mass shooting — defined as four or more people shot in a single event — in Chicago over the weekend.

The first occurred at about 11:13 p.m. Friday in the 4000 block of West 26th Street, when police said a drive-by shooter in a white sedan opened fire on four men as they exited a building. The vehicle fled south on Pulaski Road. The victims, ages 56, 26, 25, and 19, were wounded in the extremities and were reported in good condition.
