8 Injured, Including 4 Children, in Brooklyn Fourth of July Shooting
Eight people, including four children, were injured after a gunman opened fire during a family Fourth of July barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood late Saturday night, July 4, 2026, according to the New York Police Department.
Gunfire Erupts During Family Gathering
Police said the shooting occurred around 10:35 p.m. in the front courtyard of an apartment building near Surf Avenue and West 30th Street, shortly after nearby Independence Day fireworks had ended.
Investigators said a lone suspect, dressed in black and wearing a black ski mask, approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and fired multiple rounds into the gathering before fleeing the scene on foot.
Authorities said there was no reported argument or confrontation before the shooting.
Eight Victims Injured
Emergency responders treated eight victims, including four children. Police said seven victims are in stable condition, while one adult remains in critical condition.
The victims include:
- A 6-year-old boy shot in the stomach (stable)
- A 7-year-old boy shot in both legs (stable)
- A 12-year-old boy shot in the leg (stable)
- A 14-year-old boy shot in the thigh (stable)
- A 21-year-old woman shot in the chest (critical)
- A 25-year-old woman (stable)
- A 33-year-old man (stable)
- A 37-year-old man shot in the shoulder (stable)
Investigation Ongoing
Investigators recovered a TEC-9-style firearm with an extended magazine and multiple shell casings at the scene.
No arrests have been announced, and the motive remains under investigation. Detectives are examining whether the shooting may be connected to a homicide that occurred on the same block earlier in the week.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said city officials would use every available resource to investigate the shooting and address the violence.
